Trapped man, dog rescued from West Coast cave

Emergency services have rescued a man and his dog after the pair became trapped eight metres down a cave on the West Coast.

Emergency services arrived at the cave near Limestone Track, Marsden, about 3pm where the 49-year-old and his dog were trapped.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesman said the dog was extricated first, using a harness, about 5.50pm. The man was pulled from the cave about 20 minutes later.

The rescue was attended by Search and Rescue, St John ambulance, Fenz and Police.

West Coast Police Search and Rescue Sergeant Mark Kirkwood said it was important people are prepared when venturing into the bush as the West Coast has many caves and mine shafts.

“It’s important to keep an eye on the weather, wear appropriate clothing and make sure you are with a companion," Sgt Kirkwood said.

“Police would like to thank volunteers who showed up at short notice.

“Thankfully this incident had a happy ending.”
