Man's body found in West Coast gorge

A Christchurch man has died after swimming in a river on the West Coast.

Ben Gourdie was with a group in hot pools when the 29-year-old went into the Taipo River near Jacksons to cool off.

Police were alerted that he was missing, when a Personal Locator Beacon was activated by the rest of the group just before midnight on Saturday.

His body was later found in Tyco Gorge and his family had been informed.

Senior Sergeant Stu Koefoed said the matter had been referred to the Coroner.
