Greymouth police have begun an investigation into a "suspicious" fire that badly damaged an Indian restaurant and other nearby busineses.

At its height, more than 60 firefighters were called in to tackle the blaze early on Sunday morning.

Priya Indian restaurant in Tainui St caught fire shortly before 4am and was well alight when crews arrived.

Police said early indications were that the fire was deliberately lit and they were continuing with a scene examination on Sunday afternoon.

A total of four businesses have been affected due to the fire spreading and the buildings have suffered substantial damage.

Greymouth fire chief Lee Swinburn said crews came all the way from Hokitika to help battle the blaze.

The restaurant suffered "major damage" as did the office block at the rear of that building, Swinburn said.

It was an older, two-storey building and the flames had caught through the roof of the structure.

"So it was difficult to tackle but a good effort from all of the brigades.

"There were three other commercial premises attached and they were all saved."

The response time was really good, the neighbouring bridages were there within five minutes, he said.

Smoke was initially seen coming from the restaurant, before it spread to an electrical wholesale business.

The fire was nearly extinguished by 8.30am but a fire investigator would remain on site today to determine the cause of the blaze.

Police said they would like to hear from anyone in the Tanui St area between 3.30am and 4.15am who may have seen any suspicious activity.

People can call Greymouth Police on (03) 768-1600, or provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Tainui St, which was partially closed this morning, was now open.
