Rider charged after death of passenger

A 52-year-old Inangahua man has been charged with drink-driving causing death in relation to the fatal motorcycle crash near Berlins, in the lower Buller Gorge, on Saturday afternoon.

Pillion passenger Jayne Jamieson, also 52, of Cronadun, died instantly in the crash, about 1km east of the Berlins Hotel and Cafe, after the bike apparently got into trouble on the road edge.

Ms Jamieson was taking part in the Tribute 29 Pike River Memorial motorcycle run and was on the homeward straight after stopping for lunch in Westport.

The rider charged in relation to the tragedy will appear in the Westport District Court on January 17.

Police said yesterday inquiries into the fatal crash were ongoing.

They were still keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who had information about those involved.
