A large slip has collapsed a 20m section of the popular Point Elizabeth Walkway, along the coast north of Greymouth.

Department of Conservation Greymouth operations manager Shane Hall said that the slip was between the Point Elizabeth lookout and the entrance to the track at Rapahoe.

"The damaged section of track has fallen approximately 15m and is still moving," Mr Hall said.

Doc has closed the track from the Rapahoe entrance to the junction with the lookout.

A geologist will assess the slip once it has settled.

Following that assessment, Doc will consider rebuilding and re-routing the track to avoid future slips in that area.

The track to the Point Elizabeth lookout remained open from the southern end at Cobden.
