A resurrected young dairy handlers' competition is being held for this year's Otago show season.

South Otago A&P Show (SOAP) committee spokeswoman Katy Button said the competition would be run across three shows and the ultimate winner would be the entrant [and their calf] who had entered all three competitions and accumulated the most points.

''The Aakland Southern All Breeds Dairy Handlers Competition: Clutha Championship will be competed for at the West Otago, South Otago and Tokomairiro A&P shows in November and December,'' she said.

The award would be made at the Tokomairiro show.

''The focus is on showmanship, stockmanship and stock handling.''

''They [the entrants] have to provide their own calves or yearlings, which have to be NAIT tagged.''

Classes are for juniors 10 years and under, intermediates 11 to 16 years and seniors 17 to 21 years, and entry is free.

The competition has been on hold for the past two show seasons because of precautions around Mycoplasma bovis.
