Vineyard receives global recognition

When the Mills family and their staff, of Rippon, Wanaka, woke up recently, they were inundated with congratulatory messages from around the world.

Sales and marketing manager Jo Mills said Rippon had been named eighth in a list of the top 50 wineries to visit in the world.

The inaugural list had been compiled by votes from The World's Best Vineyards Academy, made up of about 500 leading wine experts, sommeliers, and luxury travel correspondents from around the world.

Craggy Range, in Havelock North, was listed at 11.

''We were also named best vineyard in Australasia,'' Ms Mills said.

''That was a really lovely surprise.''

She said they had no idea they were being considered for the list, as it was not part of a competition, and they had been given votes based on the operation's overall experience rather than only the quality of their wines or their location on the shores of Lake Wanaka.

''It was a really wonderful tribute to the whole team and for what our family has done,'' she said.

She said they heard the news two weeks ago and had woken to a steady stream of messages through emails and social media from friends and clients overseas and throughout New Zealand.

She said it was a tribute to the Rippon team.

''We are carrying on doing whatever it was that made them vote for us,'' she said.
