Beef + Lamb New Zealand is investigating picking up the "Invite a Townie to Dinner" idea for future national lamb days.
Wairarapa farmers Matt and Lynley Wyeth saw National Lamb Day, which was held on Thursday, as a chance for farmers to bridge the urban-rural disconnect.
They challenged other sheep and beef farmers in New Zealand to pick up on their "Invite a Townie to Dinner" campaign.
Beef + Lamb New Zealand southern South Island extension manager Olivia Ross was on the road all week, so her version became "gift a townie their dinner".
She dropped off lamb at a radio station, and to a dairy farmer based at Waipahi who (unlike sheep farmers) did not always get access to lamb.
While in Dunedin, she visited her old school, Otago Girls’ High School, and gave a past teacher a lamb roast and lamb shanks.
"Everything we do links back to the food we eat, whether it be body conditioning ewes or soil management," she said.
