Bulls are on the agenda at Beef + Lamb New Zealand's Power of the Bull field day in Maniototo on April 24.

Organised by the Southern Districts Hereford Club (SDHC) in association with B+LNZ, the field day will include a tour of Patearoa and Stonehenge stations, starting at 10am.

Convener Daryl King, who is also chairman of the SDHC, said the main purpose of the field day was education and getting people to understand how to use statistics, data and other tools available for herd improvement and to produce a better quality beef.

Speakers will include Bruce Robertson, breeder and judge from the Duncraigen stud sheep and beef farm, near Wyndham, who will talk about structural correctness.

Stud breeder Laurie Paterson, of Waikaka, one of the first to introduce estimated breeding values (EBV) to the industry, will look at their use as a production tool.

B+LNZ Genetics national beef genetics manager Max Tweedie and Caberfeidh station's farm manager Matt Smith will talk about the B+LNZ Genetics beef progeny test.

A formal panel discussion at the end of the day will discuss the benefits of hybrid vigour and visitors will be encouraged to text questions to the experts during the tour.

Mr King expected 150 to 200 people to attend.
