Southern competitors took home most of the top prizes at the South Island Sheep Dog Trial Championships.

The Southland Centre hosted the championships at the grounds of Mararoa Sheep Dog Trial Club.

Club president Andy Dennis, of Manapouri, said about 240 triallists competed in Western Southland for five days ending May 8.

Each hunt course had 250 runs and each head course had 220 runs.

Mr Dennis thanked everyone who helped make the event happen including Davaar Station and Burwood Station.

The sheep from both properties performed well during the competition.

"It was nice to be able to showcase Fiordland because a lot of the North Islanders had never been to this corner of Southland."
