Young Texan Hereford enthusiast Tyler Allan has been working with cattle since he "hit the ground".

Mr Allan (19) is a member of the United States team taking part in the young breeders competition, a youth event being held in conjunction with the World Hereford Conference.

Teams have come from Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, the United Kingdom and the US, as well as two teams each from New Zealand and Australia.

The competition, loosely based on the Young Farmer of the Year, includes various agricultural modules, a quiz, public speaking and stock judging and handling.

Yesterday, participants were involved in a clipping competition and will take part in a Hereford feature show at the Wanaka A&P Show, which starts today and finishes tomorrow.

It was Mr Allan’s first trip to New Zealand. He said

showing cattle was strong in Texas.

There were large numbers of entries, and people bred cattle specifically for shows.

He enjoyed the competitive aspect of showing and "pushing so hard for near perfection".
