Giant gum

Siblings Eden (7) and Gabriel (5) McPherson climb a gum tree at their home in Roxburgh. Their father Glen McPherson said the tree had a girth of about 12m.

On the request of a reader, Southern Rural Life started a search for the fattest tree in the South.

So far, the tree at the top of the leaderboard is a giant Sequoia giganteum in Queenstown with a girth of 15.3m.
