Maniototo YFC gears up for skills day

It is "Unfinished business" for this year’s round of New Zealand Young Farmers’ Clubs’ district skills days.

The theme reflects the impact Covid-19 had on the regional and national Young Farmers competitions earlier this year as both the Otago-Southland regional final and the national final were cancelled.

The Maniototo Young Farmers Club is organising the Otago district skills day at Gimmberburn Hall on October 3 and is encouraging members from the region’s clubs to enter.

The top performers will go on to compete in the regional final.

Organising committee spokesman Josh Harrex said it was the first time the club had held a district final.

"We are organising as many modules and as many people as we can and we are running with what we think will work.

"Some of the modules may not even be farming related, but are basic skills."

The club is considering organising an event for Agri-Teens and Agri-Kids later on in the year.

Under a previous competition rule a contestant could enter an FMG Young Farmer of the Year regional final a maximum of four times but now there are no restrictions on the number of times they could compete.

However, the restriction of being allowed to compete only twice in a grand final is still in place.
