Every time shepherd Angel-Lee Wood attends a dog training day she picks up little more than she did from the last one.

Dog training days are now a common occurrence throughout rural New Zealand and Miss Wood said it's definitely not a case of ''been to one, been to all''.

Angel and her workmates attended a Steve Kerr training day at Rocklands Station at Clarks Junction recently.

''I really like coming along to these sort of days. Each time I do I find I take away something quite useful to try out on my own dogs,'' she said.

Steve Kerr farms a sheep and beef property in the Mackenzie Country. He said he was approached by Aaron (aka Raro) Apii from Purina dog food company to host the training days around the South Island.

Mr Kerr said the training day idea was a collaboration between Purina, which contracts him, and the local farm retailer in the area which puts on a barbecue. Mr Kerr said the two companies work in with either a Young Farmers club or collie club to get the word out and charge a fee for people to attend.

''The club then gets to keep the proceeds. It's just a really good way for these big retail companies to give back to their communities,'' Mr Kerr said.
