Central Otago's famous Ale Trail is fast becoming one of New Zealand's favourite and most unique tourism features.

The Ale Trail winds its way through some of the most spectacular country in the South Island, from lush fruit belts and plains to the ancient hills, gorges and gullies that were plundered by gold-mining pioneers more than 100 years ago.
 
The fascinating story of Central Otago can be read through the Ale Trail. The Luggate Hotel is an institution among good old fashioned Kiwi hotels. Founded in 1867, it is the oldest pub in the region. Located right on the Otago Central Rail Trail, the Lauder Hotel is the original Railway Hotel. Built in 1904 to accommodate guests, the hotel was turned 180 degrees to face the road when the train numbers diminished.
