    Central Otago's famous Ale Trail is fast becoming one of New Zealand's favourite and most unique tourism features.

    The Ale Trail winds its way through some of the most spectacular country in the South Island, from lush fruit belts and plains to the ancient hills, gorges and gullies that were plundered by gold-mining pioneers more than 100 years ago.
     
    The fascinating story of Central Otago can be read through the Ale Trail. The hotels served as community meeting-places for the early settlers and it is a tradition that has continued with Central Otago folk ever since. The trail hotels all offer a very warm welcome and a unique snapshot of local history.

    The Stadium Tavern is situated on State Highway 8 at the northern entrance to Alexandra in Central Otago. The tavern has been newly renovated and refurbished to a very high standard – whilst retaining some of the unique features of Alexandra’s heritage.     A vital supply post for prospectors seeking their fortune in the Central Otago goldfields, the impressive stone walls of The Victoria Store have stood the testament of time for nearly one and a half centuries and are now home to the Victoria Store Brewery. The Victoria Store Brewery has history running through its beer lines. The names on the different brews evoke the toil of those early pioneers who struggled to make their mark on the harsh Central Otago landscape . . .
    The Luggate Hotel is an institution among good old fashioned Kiwi hotels. Founded in 1867, it is the oldest pub in the region. Serving up local wild game and hearty country meals, the warm and welcoming staff have been looking after the locals for close to 150 years.     Established in 1998, the brewery gets its inspiration from the beautiful surroundings and unique vibe of Wanaka - that's why local landmarks are used on its labels. Pure ingredients and alpine water are used to create the hand crafted micro-brewed beers.
     
    Blacks Hotel in Ophir is an iconic Art-Deco country hotel, restaurant and pub. Ophir is a small settlement in Central Otago, New Zealand, located between Alexandra and Ranfurly, close to the east bank of the Manuherikia River
     
    Located right on the Otago Central Rail Trail, the Lauder Hotel is the original Railway Hotel. Built in 1904 to accommodate guests, the hotel was turned 180 degrees to face the road when the train numbers diminished.
    Built in 1925, this Becks icon sits across the road from the original hotel, built in 1864. The hotel features whisky memorabilia and unusual antiquities that will have you stepping back in time.
     
    Situated in the beautiful township of Naseby, with its lovely old buildings from a bygone error is the Royal Hotel, one of the oldest original pubs in New Zealand. The Royal experience is still much appreciated by locals and visitors alike – its spirit is always friendly, personal and informal. The ambience of the 151 years of hospitality is all around you.     Built in 1863, the Ancient Briton was Naseby's first hotel and today it is one of only two remaining hotels in the town. For the weary miners, high-country shepherds and curlers, it was a sanctuary offering respite from the cold and today it is still the town's social and cultural hub.
