Wind, rain, hail and even snow have not been enough to delay the long-awaited work on Rakiura-Stewart Island’s Observation Rock viewing platform.

Rakiura Department of Conservation acting operations manager Alex MacLeod said work on the platform was under way despite some challenging weather.

The poor weather had made conditions underfoot muddy while the contractors were tackling the drilling and installation of the 21 rock anchors.

Mr MacLeod provided an update to the Southland District Council during its visit to the island last month.

"We have some very secure footings in place, down to decent rock and we are ready to concrete pour. So, it’s good news.

The concrete footings that support the platform’s beams were 90% complete, and the next step would be to install the four glu-lam beams.

Then work would start on contouring the joists around the site’s rocky outcrops.

Work was running about two weeks behind schedule, but he expected it would be completed, within budget, around the end of September or early October.

"I think the final product will be great," Mr MacLeod said.

"We acknowledge that Observation Rock is a popular local attraction and we are working hard to complete this work before the up-coming summer season."

The project manager was grateful for the local community’s support and remaining outside the barriers have closed access to the track.
