A new JB HI-FI store is set to open in Invercargill just in time for the Christmas shopping rush.

JB HI-FI national marketing manager Jon Kirman said the new Invercargill store was a part of the company’s effort to "double down" in New Zealand, expanding from 14 stores to 38 in the next five years.

"We’re going through this massive growth phase to get better coverage across the country and Invercargill is one of those areas where we saw that there was an opportunity to expand the network into."

He said although the economy was tight, the biggest challenge was not a financial one, it was finding the right location for the store.

The store was set to open in early December in Invercargill Central next to the Tay St entrance, he said.

Mr Kirman said the store would create at least 30 new jobs for Invercargill including casual, part-time and full-time roles — that number would go up to 50 jobs around Christmas time.

There would be some opening specials and an in-house DJ to celebrate the opening weekend, Mr Kirman said.

He said the company was excited to be bringing a different style of technology retail to Invercargill.

"JB HI-FI is quite an unusual brand in that we’re all about having fun with retail.

"We kind of position ourselves as being kind of like your tech-savvy mate that’s going to set you up for success."
