Tami Neilson and Marlon Williams are among the finalists for the APRA 2026 best country music song award, to be presented at Country Music Honours at Gore’s St James Theatre on May 22.

The event will also include the presentation of the MLT Songwriting Award, presented to the best unreleased song.

Neilson is no stranger to the awards, having won it five times since 2014.

In 2025 she became the inaugural recipient of the Country Music Honour for Contribution to Country Music in Aotearoa.

She was nominated for her song Neon Cowboy, which she said in statement represented "a lifelong dream" of chasing Nashville and country music.

Williams, another previous winner of the award, has been nominated this year for his song Whakameatia Mai, co-written by Kommi Tamati-Elliffe.

The other finalists are Dive Bar, written by first-time finalist Aaron Pulemagafa with Jeremiah Jayden Fale, Edward Liu and Christian Tjandrawinata, and Moonlight Hotel, written by Shannon Fowler, aka Tom Lark.

The MLT Songwriting Award gives a platform to the best unreleased songs from writers from all over the country.

This year’s finalists include industry heavyweights Mel Parsons and Barry Saunders, Gore’s Ron Mitchell and first-time finalist Milly Tabak.

Judged by a panel of country music artist and music industry individuals, the award gives audience members a chance to witness the very first chapter of unreleased songs from New Zealand’s song-writing community.

The Country Music Honours will also include a celebration of the Topp Twins, who will be presented with the 2026 Country Music Honour for Contribution to Country Music.

The award recognises members of the country music community who have achieved great heights of their own and have contributed to the past, present and future of country music in New Zealand.

Recipients do not perform at the event but are given a tribute crafted by their friends and peers. The Waratahs will perform at this year’s event. — Allied Media
