12 records set at school athletics championships

Twelve records fell at the weekend's Otago-Southland secondary school's athletics championships, in Invercargill.

Eight of those records went to Otago athletes and John McGlashan College's Josh Hou claimed two.

The middle distance runner bettered both the under-14 boys 1500m and 3000m marks.

In the 1500m he managed a time of 4min 30.93sec, to break Josh Browne's record by less than a second.

He backed that up by running 9min 59.37sec in the 3000m, a time marginally quicker than Oli Chignell's record.

Three Mount Aspiring College athletes claimed records.

Jack East ran an impressive 52.53sec in the senior boys 400m to break the old mark of 52.90sec.

In the under-14 girls, Zoe Smith smashed the 1500m record with a time of 4min 48.98sec, well under the record of 4min 55.40sec which had stood since 1999.

Janus Staufenberg made it three for the school in the senior boys 1500m.

He ran 3min 58.89sec to better the old mark of 4min 01.38sec.
