John McGlashan College pupils Padraig MacKenzie (right) and Cam Johnstone approach the summit of Flagstaff during the Three Peaks Mountain race yesterday.

The boys were part of a group from the school completing the race as part of their NCEA physical education course.

Competitors met tough conditions, with strong winds making for slower times over the 26km course, on which  runners reach the peaks of Flagstaff, Swampy Summit and Mount Cargill.

Former Dunedin runner Daniel Balchin claimed victory in his first off-road race.
