Good performances delivered despite tough time in rain

Rain made things tough at  Saturday’s athletics meeting at the Caledonian Ground.

Only the 100m — which was run first — escaped the rain and perhaps unsurprisingly, that particular event  attracted the best athlete turnout.

Hill City-University’s Nathan MacDonell took the win in the event, running a time of 11.47sec to beat Taieri’s Sam Gouverneur, who ran 11.71sec.

MacDonell took the double when he finished first in the 200m as well, the 20-year-old running 23.54sec to take victory over 15-year-old Aspiring runner Jack East, who ran 23.96sec.

Just for good measure, MacDonell made it three wins by running 7.45sec in the 60m, to again edge East.

Taieri’s Joccoaa Palmer was similarly dominant in claiming wins in the women’s 100m and 200m.

She ran 13.26sec in the 100m, and 27.88sec in the 200m.

Taieri decathlete Felix McDonald showed his increasing versatility claiming a win in the 800m.

He ran a time of 1min 59.64sec to beat Winton’s Liam Turner and Gouverneur in a tight contest.

The 19-year-old then threw 9.86m to claim a win in the under-20 shot put.

While throwing different weights, he was behind senior winner Mike Scholten, who threw 10.23m, and under-18 winner Hamish Mears, who threw 12.95m to beat Cameron Miller, who managed 10.86m. Mears also impressed with a throw of 42.93m in the under-18 discus.

Zharna Beattie was the best of the women’s shot putters, with a throw of 10.51m, while Fiordland’s Dyani Shepherd-Oates impressed in the women’s hammer with a throw of 47.08m.

Ethan Walker threw 49.36m to win the men’s javelin, while Liam Condliffe jumped 5.89m to win the men’s long jump.Tara McNally was the best of the women’s long jumpers with 4.30m.
