Vivian Jepkemoi Cheryuiot of Kenya took home gold in an Olympic record 14:26.17. Hellen Onsando Obiri, also of Kenya, won silver in 14:29.77, while Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia claimed bronze in 14:33.59.
Hamblin, a 1500m specialist, commented afterwards that she went into the race with shoulder and ankle problems. However she did not use that as an excuse, saying "everyone goes to the start line less than perfect".
