Junior-senior double to OGHS

Otago Girls' High School claimed the junior-senior double at yesterday's Otago-Southland cross-country relays in Milton.

The school's senior team won the 4x2km race in 29min 34.8sec, beating St Hilda's Collegiate by 30sec.

Rebekah Hill was the team's most impressive runner, completing the fastest individual leg of any team in 7min 04sec.

She was joined by Jenna and Taylor Thorne, and Caitlin O'Donnell.

In the junior race, Otago Girls' finished in 29min 20.5sec to secure a 53sec win over Columba College.

Becky de la Harpe and Jordn Evans-Tobata both ran rapid legs in 7min 03.4sec and 7min 04.1sec respectively.

They were joined by Jesika Sebelin and Jess Tyrrell to comfortably account for the other teams.

In the senior boys race, King's High School ruled supreme in 24min 10sec to beat Otago Boys' High School by 19sec.

Riley Smith and William Scharpf kept King's within striking distance in a close race, before sub-6min runs from George Bates and Drew Cairney took the team into first.

Otago Boys' was second, helped by Nathan Hill, who had the fastest run of the day in 5min 35.9sec.

In the junior boys race Josh Hou delivered an impressive final leg to help John McGlashan College edge Otago Boys' by 5sec in 26min 03.3sec.

Grayson Westgate, Calvin Ruru and Matheson Colquhoun kept the team in touch, before Hou ran 5min 51.6sec to overhaul Otago Boys' which led by 10sec at the final change.

Hou's time was 16sec faster than the next best runner.

The senior mixed race was won by Taieri College in 27min 48.7sec, its team consisting of Laura Bungard, Thomas Coulston, Mackenzie Miller and Cameron O'Connell.

In the junior mixed race, Wakatipu High School ran 28min 51.7sec to beat Dunstan High School by nearly a minute.

It led the whole way, as the team of Tasuku Yoneto, Hannah Battrick, Carmen Woodhouse and Todd Vermeir proved too strong.

The Otago secondary schools cross-country series concludes with the Otago secondary schools championships at Kaikorai Valley College next Thursday.
