Otago trio selected

Three Otago athletes were named in the secondary schools national championships team at the weekend.

Mount Aspiring College’s Sammy Burke and Otago Boys’ High School’s Anton Schroeder were among the 50 athletes selected for the track and field team. Meanwhile, Burke and Gregor Findlay, also of Mount Aspiring College, were named in the road race team.

Burke, who won the senior girls road race and claimed silver in the senior girls 3000m, was also named as one of 11 athletes of the meet. That group also included highly touted pole vaulter Olivia McTaggart and world-leading shot putter Ryan Ballantyne.

Schroeder won the senior boys javelin with a throw of 56.63m, while Findlay finished fourth in the junior boys road race.

Southland jumper Atipa Mabonga was also named in the team, having won the senior girls triple jump for the third consecutive year.
