Dunedin javelin thrower Tori Peeters gave it her best shot but is now eyeing a tilt at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Peeters (23) enjoyed a bittersweet meet at the Caledonian Ground on Sunday night, as she attempted to reach the Commonwealth Games B standard of 59.70m.

She ended up notching a New Zealand record with a throw of exactly 57m but it was still short of the required standard.

Peeters said it was mixed emotions after the meeting which had been organised for Peeters to attempt to reach the standard.

``I was just short of qualifying but still managed a PB and a record. I performed very well and technically threw well so I have to be happy with that,'' she said.

``I'm in a good space at the moment just with the way I am throwing and all the technical bits coming together. It was a shame I could not reach the standard but I'm not disheartened.''

She recorded the new distance - the previous record was 56.84m, also held by Peeters - with her second throw.

It was not the greatest of conditions for javelin throwing.

The wind had been around to start with but died down shortly after Peeters started throwing so that had an impact on later throws.

Peeters said she was patient with her record-breaking throw and was not trying to throw it out of the park.

She said the goal was just to be more consistent and of course, throw further.

Having competed frequently in the past three months, trying to chase the qualification, it was now time to refresh and get into some more dedicated training.

With all the competitions, trying to chase the standard, she had not done a lot of training.

She graduated with a physical education degree at the end of last year and is now working part-time at Vogel St Physio as a rehab consultant.

The Australian Championships in Gold Coast next month are on the agenda. She will also line up at the New Zealand Championships in Hamilton in March.

An injured back impacted on her last season but Peeters said her body was feeling good after all the competitions.

The goal was to get better and eventually represent New Zealand in Tokyo in 2020.

``Sure, it is disappointing I will not be able to go to the Gold Coast for the Comm Games, being on our back doorstep. I supposed it was a case of so close yet so far.

``But you can't dwell on these things. It's onwards and upwards from here.''
