Pole vault records among those to fall at secondary schools event

Records tumbled at the Otago secondary schools athletics event, held at the Caledonian Ground in Dunedin on Friday and Saturday.

A couple of pole vault records fell. Otago Boys’ Cole Gibbons jumped 3.30m in the under-16 boys event and Amaya Leslie (Columba) got over the bar at 2.30m in the under-19 girls section.

In the under-15 boys 5kg shot put, Jacob Waide of Otago Boys threw 13.21m, while St Hilda’s Renee Willis biffed the 3kg shot put 13.20m to set a new mark in the under-15 girls competition as well.

Kaikorai Valley’s Nirvana Hepi-Breen was too powerful in the under-16 girls 3kg hammer. She came up with a record toss of 44.56m.

In the triple jump, Tyler Clarke of Otago Boys jumped 11.46m in the under-14 boys event.

Manaia Lesa of Otago Boys got into the record books as well with a 5.53m leap in the under-14 boys long jump. He also collected a record in the under-14 boys 100m, scorching the distance in 11.99sec.

Jorja Gibbons of Queen’s High School jumped 5m in the under-14 girls long jump to set a record.

In the senior girls 100m final, Celia Ward of Dunstan High won in a record time of 12.30sec. She also took the senior record in the 200m with a time of 25.66sec.

But in the under-16 girls 200m, Mt Aspiring’s Abby Fisher clocked a faster time of 25.40sec and is one to watch.

St Hilda’s Zara Geddes won the under-16 girls 3000m in a record time of 10min 35.69sec, while Hannah Prosser (Mt Aspiring) nabbed the under-16 girls title in a record 10min 14.66sec.

Cameron Moffitt (Otago Boys) won the under-19 boys 300m hurdles in 39.55sec.

The Mt Aspiring College 4x100m relay team of Estelle Gellatly, Abby Fisher, Georgie Bruce and Niamh Townsend broke the record with a time of 50.76sec.
