Relay team snares gold

The Otago 4x400m under-20 relay team snared a gold medal for the province at the national athletics championships in Hamilton over the weekend.

The team made up of Matthew Ogle, Sam Gouverneur, Cameron Miller and Felix McDonald won by more than six seconds in a time of 3min 23.41sec.

This was an Otago record and a good achievement from the quartet.

In the final day of the meeting, Sam Bremer was second in the senior men's 1500m, in a time of 3min 51.44sec, with Hawkes Bay Eric Speakman winning in a time of 3min 49.90sec.

Hugh McLeod-Jones was third in the under-20 men's discus with a throw of 43.92m.

Adriana Mawhinney was second in the under-20 high jump with a jump of 1.65m.

Anna Grimaldi was a clear winner in the 200m parafed event with a time of 26.34sec.

Sprinter Joseph Millar put a couple of Olympic medallists in the shade on the final day,

the 24-year-old Tauranga speedster powering to victory over 200m in 20.37 seconds.

The time, with a negligible tail wind, broke Chris Donaldson's 20-year-old national record of 20.42sec.

It was also well under the 20.44sec selection mark for this year's world championships in London and also met the nomination standard for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
