Southern competitors in medals

Athletes from the South took home a truckload of medals from the national championships in Christchurch over the weekend.

Anna Grimaldi showed she is back to her best with a gold in the 100m para women’s event, winning in 12.81sec.

Rebekah Greene won the 5000m senior women’s grade in 16min 51.66sec and yesterday finished third in the 1500m in 4min 20.64sec.

Javelin thrower Ethan Walker won the under-20 men’s grade with a throw of 59.74m, nearly 12m ahead of second.

In the para javelin, Ben Baines won gold with a throw of 32.13m.

Southlanders Quinn Hartley and Sam Colyer did the double in the under-20 long jump.

Hartley won with a leap of 7.11m and Colyer picked up second with jump of 6.87m. Hartley also won the under-18 long jump with a jump of 6.66m

In the under-20 400m, John Gerber won gold in 49.57sec and Cameron Moffitt won a gold in the 110m hurdles, recording 15.32sec.

Moffitt won a silver in the under-18 300m hurdles in a 39.71sec and also a silver in the under-18 long jump, with a jump of 6.48m. Alex Brown won silver in the 3000m walk and the 10,000m walk.

Rosie Elliot won a silver in the senior women’s 100m, in a time of 11.66sec, finishing just under 0.2sec behind Zoe Hobbs.

Elliot went very close to winning the 200m yesterday. Hobbs took off and had a good lead at the top of the straight but Elliot put in an amazing finish and just failed to close Hobbs down. Hobbs won in 23.26sec while Elliot recorded 23.27sec.

Liam Wilson finished third in the para long jump with a jump of 4.91m.

Javelin thrower Anton Schroder was second in the senior men’s javelin with a throw of 57.51m. Jaimen Millar won a bronze in the under-18 javelin with a throw of 38.48m.

In the senior women’s 400m, Sophie Napper finished third of 56.63sec.

In the senior men’s 400m, Shay Veitch finished second in 48.25sec. Caitlin Dore won a bronze in the para javelin with a 9.04m.

The Otago men’s 4 x 100m relay team of Schuyler Orr, Nathan McDonell, Felix McDonald and Jake Paul finished second in its event. Its time of 42.97sec was just under 0.5sec behind the winning team from Canterbury.

The Otago women’s 4 x 100m relay team also finished second, again behind Canterbury. The team of Laura MacCulloch, Joccoaa Palmer, Leonie Palmer and Napper clocked a time of 43.83sec, 0.64sec behind Canterbury.

Todd Bates finished second in the senior men’s hammer with a distance of 51.47m. Southland’s Trent Hogg was third in the under-18 discus with a distance of 45.07m. Tegan Ashley was second in the women’s under-20 hammer, recording 43.31m.
