Cheering crowds were in abundance at the Otago Primary School Triathlon Championships in Cromwell yesterday, with 560 children from around 50 schools taking part.

Years 5 and 6 did a 1500m run, 4.5 km bike and 100m swim, and year 7 and 8 did a 3000m run, 9km bike and 150m swim.

Organiser Bill Godsall, of Sport Otago, said it was a great day out.

''The kids were outstanding - awesome efforts and great sportsmanship.''
