Former Commonwealth Games 10,000m champion Dick Tayler is making ''good progress'' from a heart-related medical incident which resulted in his admission to hospital last week.

Tayler is still in Rotorua Hospital but friend Paul Allison said he was ''on the road to recovery''.

''He is still needing quite a bit of rest'', Allison said.

''But I spoke with him on the phone ... and he is making great strides.''

Tayler (68), who lives in Waikouaiti, was on a two-week tour following the British and Irish Lions and was travelling with some colleagues in a van last Sunday when he had the medical incident.

''The first people on the scene were three young female doctors who were on their way for a swim which helped with his recovery,'' Allison said.

''There are no signs to suggest that his recovery won't be a full one and he is making surprisingly good progress ... but it is a long recovery for him.''

Tayler's progress will continued to be monitored closely and it is unclear when he will be well enough to leave hospital.

Tayler won the 10,000m at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. He also competed at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and 1972 Olympics.
