Titles shared at cross-country champs

One-hundred and ninety pupils competed in teams of four at the Otago-Southland cross-country relays on Thursday.

Held in Milton, the event was the third of four on the Otago secondary schools cross-country calendar.

Each athlete ran a 2km  course  over  variable terrain.

King’s High School won the senior boys title,  and St Hilda’s Collegiate won the senior girls.

Both had the fastest individual runners in their grade. Drew Cairney and Georgia Mitchell clocked in at 5min 36sec and 7min 03sec respectively. Logan Park High School won the senior mixed grade.

John McGlashan College claimed the junior boys grade and Otago Girls’ High School triumphed in the junior girls section.

Kavanagh College edged Wakatipu High School to claim  the junior mixed title.

George Bates, of King’s, and Rebekah Hill, of Otago Girls’, were the fastest individuals in each junior grade, finishing in 6min and 6min 54sec respectively.

The Otago Secondary Schools champs will be held at Kaikorai Valley College next Thursday.
