Turner, Cairney hold off quality opponents

The middle-distance races produced two close finishes at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday.

Liam Turner and Drew Cairney claimed narrow wins in the 800m and 1500m respectively, both edging quality opponents.

Winton’s Turner (18) ran a 1min 59sec 800m to beat out Taieri’s Sam Gouverneur (17) by 0.32sec.

Meanwhile 16-year-old Hill City-University runner Cairney ran a personal best 4min 06.05sec 1500m to edge Leith’s Nathan Hill (17), who finished in 4min 07.20sec.

Hill City-University’s Bella Bloomfield was the fastest woman home in the 800m in 2min 37.76sec, while Leith’s Rebekah Hill was the 1500m fastest woman in 5min 00.78sec.

Fifteen-year-old Jack East (Aspiring) put in another dominant 400m, finishing a clear winner in 51.18sec.

Mount Aspiring’s Laura MacCulloch was the fastest woman in 59.94sec.

In the 100m Felix McDonald ran 11.20sec to claim a close 100m race.

Just 0.1sec separated the top five runners, while the winner of race two, George Vare, also clocked in at 11.29sec.

McDonald also claimed the 200m in 22.43sec.Fiona Centers and Tara McNally were the fastest women in the two races, running 12.23sec and 26.85sec in the 100m and 200m respectively.

In the field Rory Hannon jumped 5.93m to beat Liam Condliffe by 1cm in the long jump, while Leonie Palmer won the women’s competition with 4.79m.

Tegan Chapman won the triple jump in 10.43m.Hugh McLeod-Jones and Hamish Mears threw 42.56m and 44.63m respectively to win their grades in the discus, while Zharna Beattie threw 31.12m to win the women’s competition.

Tori Peeters won the women’s javelin with a throw of 52m, while Anton Schroeder and Ethan Walker won their grades with 53.20m and 47.09m respectively.
