Power and good race tactics worked as the senior boys team from Wakatipu High School (WHS), of Queenstown, won by more than a minute from nearest rivals John McGlashan College to scoop the senior boys over-15 title at the Milton Relays yesterday.

Forty-four high school and college teams from around the region competed for honours at the Tokomairiro High School cross-country course.

The four-man WHS crew of Benjamin Britton (17), Archie Ritchie (18), Gareth Harcombe (17) and Aleks Cheifetz (16) dominated the race over four laps of the 2km-long circuit in a time of 23min 9sec, easily outpacing their opponents.

And they were not the only WHS team to win on the day at the annual Milton relay races, held by the Otago Secondary Schools Sports Association.

In the junior mixed (U15) category race, the Wakatipu mixed U15 team came home almost three minutes ahead of second-placed Taieri College, completing the four-lap relay race in a time of 26min 55sec.

Otago Boys' High School junior 1 team won the junior boys U15 (25min 47sec), Otago Girls' High School junior 1 team won the junior girls U15 (28min 31sec), Columba College senior 1 team won the girls O15 (29min 26sec), and the Taieri College senior team won the senior mixed O15 race in a time of 27min 19sec.
