Workshops boost athletes’ knowledge

Nearly 100 of Otago’s talented secondary school athletes will benefit through a series of workshops being delivered by the Otago Academy of Sport.

The athletes will been given the opportunity to learn more about sports nutrition, mental skills and athlete life in four workshops.

The first  was held in Dunedin earlier this week and attracted 60 athletes.

"We are using experts in their respective fields to give our young athletes the tools to develop and grow themselves in their sport and in life," Academy manager Michael Coutts said.

"They are also getting an insight into what it takes to reach the high-performance sporting environment."

Most sporting codes will be represented, including minority sports such as  luge.

It is the first year the Otago Academy of Sport has delivered the workshops and it  has the ambition to take the programme into Central and South Otago.

"Part of the idea was to bring this educational opportunity to the regions rather than expecting students to travel to Dunedin.

"Athletes in the regions already undertake a huge amount of travel to find competition or for training, so to be able to bring it to their doorstep has made it more accessible."
