A bombshell at the Breakers.

According to reports out of Australia, Paul Henare is out as New Zealand Breakers coach, having rejected a contract extension from the franchise, a day after the club held their annual awards dinner.

Fox Sports Australia's Olgun Uluc has reported that Henare turned down an extension, telling the club's new owners that "I will not be looking to re-sign with the club for next season. I wish the club the best for the future and thank the Breakers family for all the support over the last 15 years."

Henare has been in the role of head coach for two seasons, missing the playoffs last year before making the semifinals this season.

Last month, the Breakers underwent an ownership change, with long-time owners Paul and Liz Blackwell selling the majority stakehold in the company to an investement group led by Matt Walsh.

Henare is set to take the Tall Blacks to the Commonwealth Games next month, while the Herald understands that he is already lining up a new role.

One destination could be the Cairns Taipans, who parted ways with long-time coach Aaron Fearne last month, though that would be an interesting lateral move for one of the league's top coaches.
