Police confirmed a 28-year-old man had been charged with assault, following an incident at a Takapuna bar early this morning.

Police were called to reports of a fight at The Takapuna Bar about 12.30am, a police spokeswoman said. The victim was not seriously injured.

The accused had been bailed and would appear in the North Shore District Court on Monday, the spokeswoman said.

It was Webster's birthday yesterday.

The Breakers confirmed the club was aware of the incident and was making further inquiries but would make no further comment at this stage.

Webster has been a standout player for the Breakers in recent seasons, even attracting the attention of American NBA scouts. He had a pre-season training stint with the New Orleans Pelicans but missed out on a full time contract.

The Tall Blacks star is averaging 11 points a game this season and was the fourth highest scorer in the Australian NBL competition last season.

In 2011, Webster failed a drugs test while playing for the Breakers.

It is believed the substance Webster tested positive for was Kronic, the synthetic cannabis that was sold legally in New Zealand until recently outlawed by the Government.

The substance was neither illegal (at the time of the test) nor performance-enhancing, but is on the World Anti-Doping Agency list of banned substances.

Webster tested positive for cannabis use while playing in the New Zealand NBL for the Harbour Heat in 2010. At the time the Breakers stood by the player, but said he was on his final chance.
