It has been a tough start for Otago schools at the national secondary schools championships, but one player was poised to bring up an impressive milestone.

King’s High School forward Josh Aitcheson, who scored 42 points in his side’s opening game, was due to play his 100th game for the school against Fraser High School last night.

He first played for the school’s top senior team in year 9 and this year was a member of the Mid City Magic men’s A grade team in the Dunedin club competition, while also being in the Junior Tall Blacks.

Despite Aitcheson’s hot start, King’s dropped its first two games of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Otago Boys’ High School had two opening day losses, before bouncing back with a 74-67 win over Cashmere High School yesterday. It took on tournament favourite Rangitoto High School in the late round last night.

The St Kevin’s College boys team has had more success in the smaller schools’ competition, claiming two wins from its three games. Its only loss was by by three points to Catholic Cathedral College and it looks to be Otago’s best chance at a title.

Meanwhile, the school’s girls side lost its southern derby against Kavanagh College 85-55 in the early round yesterday. It was Kavanagh’s first win of the tournament, while St Kevin’s remained without a win. Both sides played again last night.
