University women to return to nationals

One is looking to repeat.

The other is looking to make a strong return.

For the first time in several years, a University of Otago women's team will accompany the men at the tertiary national championships.

They begin today in Christchurch and the university is looking to continue its recent run of success.

The men enter as defending champion and also claimed the 3x3 national title earlier in the year.

They played in a tournament in Taiwan in July.

A talented roster includes last year's tournament MVP, Josh Aitcheson, as well as tournament team player Matt Bardsley.

Dunedin club MVP guard Darcy Knox is also among a line-up which boasts depth throughout.

The women will put out a strong line-up featuring size and a tidy guard line-up.

The side includes the majority of the Varsity team which played in this year's club league.

In Jennifer O'Connell and Alex Bennett, it has genuine size inside, while it has plenty of depth on the perimeter.

It also has three useful pick-ups from champion South Pac Magic, in league joint-MVP Georgia Te Au, Letitia Mullaly and Millie Simpson.

The tournament begins this morning and concludes with finals on Sunday afternoon.
