Twins clash in U-30 optional pairs final

Elliot Mason defeated his twin brother, Oliver, to win the under-30 optional pairs tournament at the Dunedin Bowls Stadium on Saturday.

Elliot teamed with Sheldon Bagrie-Howley to beat Oliver and Leo Brett 14-6 in the final.

Last year the Mason twins played together and finished runner-up.

The final was tight in the early exchanges but sustained pressure from Mason, of the Forbury Park club, and Bagrie-Howley, of Gore, eventually told.

After losing their first game in section play, Mason changed positions from lead to skip which proved a masterstroke.

Mason cashed in on a wonderful foundation laid by Bagrie-Howley, winning their next five games.

Mason was in total command in the final and dominated his brother with a wide range of shots.

Mason and Bagrie-Howley were, however, stretched to the limit in the semifinal against last year's winners, Caleb Hope and Tom Taiaroa.

The standard of bowling was high, and there was ``rich talent'' on show, organiser Ken Walker said.

``The day was an unqualified success.

``The format was tailored to enable newer players to feature in graded section finals.

``There is very little to play in for age group bowlers in this region and the players just love it. So as long as they support it, we will continue with it.''

Section three provided an excellent example of the talent at the tournament, Walker said.

Beckham Wheeler-Greenall and Jack Oaten, both 15-year-old King's High School pupils, easily won their final against more experienced opponents Mat Warne and Sophia Calteaux, of the Roslyn Bowling Club.

The competition included a driving shootout won by Cole Scammell, of Tapanui. Tala Kelcher, of the Kia Toa Bowling Club, was second.

The drawing shootout produced a surprise result when new bowler Mitch Cook beat several more experienced rivals.
