Hamilton boxer and Gold Coast Commonwealth Games gold medallist David Nyika has had his medal stolen.

It was taken from his car a couple of weeks ago but Nyika only realised it was gone when he went to surprise a young fan.

The youngster had dressed up as Nyika at a school mufti-day and Nyika wanted to surprise him by turning up at his school with the medal.

However, when he couldn't find it he realised it had been stolen.

Also taken from his car were gift vouchers and police have CCTV footage of people using them and are now following up, a New Zealand Olympic committee spokesperson said.

The committee has also contacted the Gold Coast Games organisers to see if they can get Nyika a replacement medal if the original one was not able to be recovered.

The medal was Nyika's second Commonwealth Games gold having also stood on the top dais in Glasgow four years ago.
