Superstar Lisa Carrington and her Kiwi kayaking team-mates have capped a record-breaking performance at the world championships, capturing gold and bronze on the final day at Racice, Czech Republic.

The two-time Olympic champion continued her seven-year reign in her specialty K1 200, winning the event for the fifth time.

An hour later, she returned to the water with Caitlin Ryan, Aimee Fisher and Kayla Imrie to finish third in the K4 500 event, bringing New Zealand’s medal haul to two gold, one silver and one bronze at the regatta.

Carrington confirmed her favouritism for the solo event by clocking the fastest times through heats and semifinals, the only athlete to break 40 seconds (39.557) in the latter round. Dane Emma Jorgensen was next fastest with 40.213sec.

Racing from the centre of the course in the final, Carrington was unchallenged, clocking 38.433sec to finish more than half a second clear of Jorgensen.

The foursome were up against it from the, start with Germany showing out early and Hungary taking over midway through the journey.

The Hungarians, a perennial power in this event, went on to win in 1min 29.784sec, with the Germans pipping the Kiwis by 0.131sec for second.

On Saturday,  Carrington and Ryan combined for gold in the K2 500, about an hour after Carrington was edged to silver in the K1 500.

‘‘Having that dream of being a world champion is one thing, but even better, doing it with your mate, your team-mate and someone who really inspires you is really, really exciting,’’ said Ryan.

‘‘I’m really proud and honoured to have had the opportunity to paddle alongside Lisa, and win a world championship.’’

The medal return eclipses New Zealand’s previous best at the world championships.

Olympic great Paul MacDonald and Ian Ferguson picked up two golds and a silver in 1987, while Carrington and Teneale Hatton won two golds and a bronze in 2013, and two golds and a silver the following year.
