Steve Smith will not challenge the 12-month ban handed down to him by Cricket Australia (CA) after the ball-tampering scandal.

Smith, who was also stripped of the national team captaincy after breaching the code of conduct, confirmed on social media on Wednesday that he'd accepted the ban.

"I would give anything to have this behind me and be back representing my country," he tweeted.

"But I meant what I said about taking full responsibility as Captain of the team. I won't be challenging the sanctions.

"They've been imposed by CA to send a strong message and I have accepted them."

Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft had been asked to confirm their stance by the end of Thursday ahead of possible hearings on April 11.

However, Smith has accepted the breach brought against him; namely that he knew of and failed to take steps to stop Bancroft tampering with the ball with sandpaper on the third day of the third test against South Africa, under Warner's instruction.

At this stage, it's understood Bancroft is also likely to accept his nine-month suspension, while Warner appears the most likely to appeal his 12-month sanction and lifetime leadership ban.
