Batsman back; bowler added

A newcomer and a returner have received Otago Cricket’s final two contract offers for this year.

Opening batsman Camden Hawkins joins 14 other returners who were offered contracts in the first round.

More notable is right-arm medium fast bowler Jarrod McKay.

A 19-year-old from Nelson, McKay moves south after finding his way blocked in a quality Central Districts bowling attack.

He has one first class match, against Northern Districts, to his name.

In that match he took two wickets for 77 runs.

In a statement, Otago Cricket performance manager Simon Forde said the offers reflected the side’s two priorities.

The first was retaining its current squad — which Hawkins had been part of.

The second was boosting its seam bowling depth — which it had done through McKay.

‘‘[McKay] is an exciting young prospect who will add significant value to our bowling stocks this season and into the future,’’ Forde said.

‘‘He’s a big man who will provide a point of difference to the attack.’’

McKay joins Jacob Duffy, Nathan Smith, Matt Bacon and Michael Rae in Otago’s seam bowling line-up.
