The late withdrawal of Jarrod Waldron and the absence of Craig Smith, who is required for Otago, have affected North Otago's preparations for its Hawke Cup game against Southland.
North Otago selector David Sewell said the balance of the side had been upset for the two-day game starting in Invercargill tomorrow.
"Jarrod pulled out rather late. He stated that he wasn't enjoying his cricket at the moment and wanted a bit of a break. It came as a bit of a shock and meant we'll have to shuffle the order around a bit. Jarrod did say that if we really needed him he'd be available after Christmas."
Sewell said John Blakely had also been a late withdrawal. Even with the defections, North Otago looks stronger than it did when it beat South Canterbury two weeks ago.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Scott Simpson and the promising Robbie Smith are back.
Duncan Drew and James Cutt will open the innings and Simon Butler will captain the side at No 3 in the order.
Simpson, Robbie Smith and Glen Paterson round out the top six.
