Fitzgibbon churns out another century for Marist

Southland cricket clubs Marist, Waikoikoi, and Old Boys all earned the competition points in round 11 of the one-day Premier League on Saturday.

Recently retired Southland captain Shaun Fitzgibbon scored another century for Marist in its 23-run win over Southland Boys’ High at the school.

Fitzgibbon opened the batting and was dismissed for 107 in the 49th over. Andy Sinclair (40) and Glen Frew (27*) also scored quickly to get the team through to 226.

Boys’ High’s top five batsmen all made starts. Jed Mockford top-scored with 35. Marist spin bowler Mitchell Harvey took four for 34. After 50 overs Alec Mathieson was not out on 28; he had also taken four wickets earlier in the day.

Old Boys beat Appleby by two wickets on Queens Park’s Main Oval. Appleby was skittled for 122, with Blake Tempers taking six for 39. Connor Hart was not out on 38 when he ran out of partners in the 28th over.

Hart then took the first wicket of the second innings and Sam Deuchrass took the next four. Old Boys were on thin ice at 51 for six, but patient batting from Jason Domigan and Kyle Schins supported the top scorers Sam Nicholson (22) and Callum Nimmo (40*). Deuchrass did get his fifth wicket, but Old Boys took victory after 39 overs.

The competition leader Waikoikoi beat Metropolitan in a tight, low-scoring match on ground two. Waikoikoi was in trouble at seven wickets down for 78 runs. Liam McFaul (23) and Blair McKenzie (28*) got the team through to 126 before it was bowled out in the 37th over.

Metropolitan stuttered through its innings before succumbing for 121 in the 45th over.

In the division one 40-over competition, Central Western beat Appleby B by 128 runs in Winton. The competition’s top batsman Grant Kean scored 51 for Central Western. A 106-run partnership from Simon Wadsworth (68*) and Gareth Paul (35*) helped the locals post 238 for five. Appleby opener Rohit Sharma (43) and Matt Stewart (31) were the only batsmen to reach double figures as Appleby was rolled for 110.

Wyndale set a total of 190 against Albion in Gore. Albion’s chase came up three runs short, with its top-scorer Steve Waddell (66) being the 10th wicket to fall, on the first ball of the final over. Aaron Kimura took 4-21 for Wyndale.

Old Boys B beat Blue Mountain by 38 runs. Charaanjeet Singh Sainai (74) and Jagroop Kahlon (62*) helped Old Boys through to 219. Taine Rarere (43) and Pargat Sandha (37) made the Blueys chase interesting before the team fell for 181.

Te Anau had the bye.

In division two, Waikoikoi B embarrassed Central Western B with a nine-wicket win. Central was dismissed for 78. Paul Clinton took four for 9 and then was unbeaten on 28 runs alongside Bradley McFaul (37*) when victory was earned.

SBHS B beat Metro B by 112 runs. Opening batsmen Lachie Nimmo (106*) and Shaun Clapperton (75) set up the team’s total of 249. Hunter Cairns then took four wickets as Metro was dismissed for 137.
