New Zealand need 348 to win the first ODI against India after the visitors made merry in their innings in Hamilton.

After stand-in Black Vaps captain Tom Latham won the toss and opted to bowl, India ran up 347-4, with Shreyas Iyer hitting his maiden ODI century (103), KL Rahul chiming in with 88 not out from 64 balls, and skipper Virat Kohli notching his 101th ODI half-century (51).

There was little of cheer for tor the home side's bowlers - Tim Southee (2-85) started well then fell apart, while Hamish Bennett (0-77) started terribly but held it together alright at the end.

Colin de Grandhomme (1-41 from eight) and Jimmy Neesham (0-52 from eight) gave the Black Caps a sniff with some good early work after two quick wickets fell in the first 10 overs, while Mitchell Santner (0-58) was okay.

The curiousity came with Ish Sodhi, who removed Virat Kohli with the delivery of the year so far, but was hit for two sixes by KL Rahul and quickly removed from the attack, with Tom Latham's captaincy providing some interesting calls, Sodhi ending with 4-0-27-1.
