Otago Country and Southland will seek to ignite their Hawke Cup campaigns this weekend.
The teams are set to meet in Invercargill for the two-day match, both coming off draws in their first matches.
Otago Country has not played since before Christmas, when it was met by North Otago’s strong second innings resistance.
However, it showed flashes of what it is capable of on that occasion.
Charnjit Singh took six wickets for 19 runs in the first innings, as Country ran through North Otago for 118.
It then put on 253 to claim first innings points, but was met by steely resistance to be denied an outright win.
Today, it will come up against Southland’s dangerous bowling line-up.
Key among that is spinner Ben Lockrose, who claimed three wickets in each innings against Mid Canterbury last week.
Lockrose, who is on the fringe of the Otago Volts squad, was complemented well by Jack Mockford, who also took five in the match for Southland.
Captain Brendan Domigan and Hamish Skelt both notched half-centuries with the bat and will likely be key in countering Country’s bowling attack.
