Chasing a target of 2015 to win the Plunket Shield match, Otago started the day on 62 for 2, needing 153 runs to win with eight wickets in hand.
However, by lunch at the University Oval, the home side had collapsed to be 183 for nine, still needing 32 runs to win.
Seasoned campaigner Neil Broom was on 37 not out at the break, the highest score of the innings, and whatever hopes Otago had rested with him.
His partner Michael Rae, who starred with the ball for the Volts yesterday, went to the break at 5 not out but was unable to help Broom get the side home, falling to veteran spinner Jeetan Patel for 11 not long after play resumed.
Broom finished on 43 not out as Otago were dismissed for 196.
For Wellington, Patel, Ian McPeake and Logan van Beek all took three wickets apiece.
