Rutherford drives Otago with ton

Otago opener Hamish Rutherford has stroked a century to help his side reach 212 for four at tea on day one of its Plunket Shield game against Central Districts at the University Oval.

The home side made a poor start, slumping to 19 for two. But a restrained Rutherford set about the repair job with Neil Broom (41) and was unbeaten on 119 at the break.

At the Basin Reserve, Wellington was 54 without loss in reply to Canterbury's paltry total of 118. Former international Hamish Bennett did the damage with five for 14 from just under 11 overs.

At Seddon Park, Auckland was 36 without loss after dismissing Northern Districts for just 148. Rookie Ben Lister took five for 29.
