Semifinalists decided in North Otago

It was a close-run thing to decide the qualifiers for the Borton Cup semifinals after the final round of play in the North Otago club competition on Saturday.

Union (105 points), St Kevin’s College (75), Waitaki Boys’ High School(75) and Oamaru (55) will play in the semifinals next Saturday.

Valley was pushed down to fifth place after falling to a three-wicket loss to Oamaru.

Valley made 185 with George Eldridge (50 not out) and Lachie Kingan (27) to the fore.

Nick Johnston took two for 26 and Stephan Grobler took three for 44.

Oamaru reached in the 48th over with 189 for seven. Grobler (61 not out) was the guiding light while Sean Weber with three wickets for 27 and Josh Phipps, two for 53, were the most effective with the ball.

Waitaki Boys’ stormed back to a win over Albion.

Albion batting first made 241 for nine with Jonty Naylor (101) and Rocky Singh (44 not out) while Geoff Mavor took three for 35 for Waitaki Boys’.

In a great reply, Waitaki Boys’ made 242 for six, with player-coach Ben Donkers scoring 99 and Alex Wilson hitting 72. Matt Finn took three for 40 for Albion.

Over 500 runs were scored at King George Park when home side Union met Glenavy.

Batting first, Glenavy made 285 for six. Rodney Vanleeuwen was unbeaten on 101 and Ethan Booth made 89. Gary Singh took two for 37 for Union.

The Union batsmen passed the Glenavy total with seven wickets in hand as wicketkeeper batsman, Duncan Drew made 120, receiving support from Blake James (38).

Kurt Thomas and Ryan Moffat were the Glenavy wicket takers.
